How To Use An Example Of An Argument Essay To Compose A Good Paper

Not every student is a great writer. They may be able to answer trivia questions better than the professor, and they may have a future working in research, but the intricacies of writing work down on paper completely escapes them. If this sounds like you, then you are not alone. Not only is it difficult to write one paper, but there are numerous types that you may potentially need to write.

Why use an argumentative essay as an example?

While you would learn some basic writing skills from browsing through cause and effect essays, expository essays, definition essays, or comparison essays, if you want to learn how to compose a good paper than will make your professor proud, considering reading some examples of argumentative essays.

Other essay types can quickly get boring while you are reading them. An argumentative essay, on the other hand, argues to win you over to the viewpoint of the author, which at least keeps it interesting. When you find one to read that is interesting and keeps your attention help throughout the paper, then you know you have found the right one.

What to look for

Read through the example once or twice quickly to become familiar with it. Then starting reading it again from scratch. As you are reading through it, pay special attention to the following things:

  • How is it worded? What type of language does the writer use?
  • Look at the structure of the paper. Does everything flow logically from one point to the next? Are paragraphs kept very short or a little bit longer?
  • Is the evidence presented clearly and concisely? Even if you don't agree, can you see how others may be swayed to this point of view? Is there enough evidence for a decision to be made?
  • Does all the information relate directly to the argument? Or does it go off on a tangent here and there?
  • How are the sources cited? What format is used?
  • What format does the entire paper follow?

Notice all of the elements that made this a good paper. While it will likely not be the same topic as the one that you are writing, follow the same format to make sure that your final work is as well done as your example. Turn in your essay and wait for an "A".
